
VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow)
VRF system (Variable Refrigerant Flow) is a high-efficiency HVAC technology widely used in commercial and mixed-use buildings, especially where flexible zoning, low noise, and energy savings are important.
What Is a VRF System?
A VRF system uses refrigerant as the primary heating and cooling medium, circulating it between one outdoor unit and many indoor units. The flow of refrigerant is varied using electronic expansion valves to deliver the exact capacity each indoor unit needs.
It is essentially an advanced multi-split system with far greater capacity, control, and efficiency.

Main Types of VRF
1. Heat Pump VRF
All indoor units operate in *cooling OR heating* mode at a given time.
Good for open-plan offices, shops, halls.
2. Heat Recovery VRF
Can provide simultaneous cooling and heating to different zones.
Uses a heat recovery box (HRB) to transfer heat from cooling zones to heating zones.
Perfect for hotels, hospitals, mixed-use buildings.

How It Works (Simple Explanation)
1. Outdoor unit contains compressors and fans.
2. Refrigerant piping network distributes refrigerant to each indoor unit.
3. Each indoor unit has its own electronic expansion valve (EEV).
4. The system modulates refrigerant flow based on:
* indoor load
* room thermostat demand
* operating mode (cool/heat)
